Batman was scoring the bottom of Gotham Harbor for fragments from a destroyed Kryptonite-irradiated meteor that recently endangered Earth. Instead, he discovered an empty spacecraft with Kryptonian markings, then promptly encountered a frightened teenaged girl exhibiting extraordinary strength and speed. The Dark Knight called on Superman, who calmed the Kryptonian-speaking girl long enough to learn that her name was Kara Zor-El, and that she was, in fact, his cousin.

As best Kara can remember, her scientist father had also believed Krypton was doomed, so he designed a rocket with a navigational system that would lock onto that of Kal-El's ship, which had left the planet earlier. Unfortunately, Krypton exploded before Kara's ship could take off, subsequently burying the craft within a large fragment of the destroyed world. Still guided by its navigational system, the ship (and, with it, the asteroid) slowly journeyed toward Kal-El and Earth, keeping Kara in suspended animation and fueling her Kryptonian cells with yellow solar energy, the latter of which allowed her powers to manifest once she had reached Earth.

Little else is known about Kara, other than she is an impressionable teenager with abilities that make her a potential target of great interest to several parties. While Superman is overjoyed that he is no longer Krypton's only survivor, Batman remains skeptical, suspecting that this Supergirl's existence is part of an insidious plot devised by one of the Man of Steel's main enemies.

Solar enhanced biologically typical Kryptonian possessing superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, invulnerability, super-sonic flight, laser vision, x-ray vision, macroscopic and microscopic vision, acute senses, hurricane- force and super-cooled breath, ability to live without nutrition, liquid, air or rest for long periods of time and an extremely long life expectancy. Invulnerability is derived from a biological aura, which can be extended to other objects and beings within close proximity.

Above average intelligence.

Only known weaknesses are to red solar radiation, Kryptonite radiation, Kryptonian viruses and magic.

Kryptonite is a radioactive element native to the extinct planet Krypton, and depending on its color qualities, effects Supergirl in different ways. Green Kryptonite is deadly.

Xarxas is a Kryptonian virus which causes havoc with the mental reason and abilities of superhuman Kryptonians eventually resulting in coma and then death.
